How to Use a Rug in a Dining Room: Style Tips From A Top Kiwi Interior Designer
We asked Lily Ng, Bremworth's very own Product Consultant, some of the biggest questions people have when it comes to styling dining room rugs. Here's what she had to say;
What is the best colour for a dining room rug?
Bremworth designer, Lily Ng, creates a mood board using one of our rug samples together with some décor elements to find the best colour for a dining room rug.
"The best colour for a dining room rug comes down to personal preference, as you can’t go wrong with any colour choice", says Lily "However, if the goal is to avoid the appearance of food stains- we recommend a yellow/brown or dark toned rug that will work best to hide stains. Another recommendation would be to purchase a Heather or Berber (speckled) rug".
Order samples of your favourite Bremworth rugs online - your first three are free! - and together with the key elements of your dining area, like the upholstery fabric, create a mood board just to make sure that your dining room rug and the rest of the elements look cohesive. Here's Lily explaining how to do that in this video from our Designer Series.
What is the most popular rug colour?
"The most popular colours for rugs in Australia are similar to popular carpet colours- beige and greys. However, to add colour to your carpet - green is quite popular as a new neutral. For Bremworth, our most popular rug colours are within our Galet range, in the light grey Dolomite and Sage, a rich forest green.
Should the dining room rug be lighter or darker than the table and chairs?
Bremworth designer Lily Ng says, "Contrasting is a good option. If you have light furniture, opt for a darker rug and vice versa. But it’s completely up to personal preference. As a basic guide: If you have wooden furniture, it depends on the timber's colour. If you have lighter-coloured wooden furniture, perhaps a shade darker could bring out the colours of your furniture. If you have darker timber/wood- we recommend going a little lighter".
Should I get a light or dark rug for a small dining room?
"Keeping the tones similar will help your small dining room appear larger", advises Lily. If you have a small dining room, know that the size of the rug is also key for making your space look bigger”.
Don't go for a smaller rug thinking it will make the dining room bigger; Your dining room rug needs to be big enough to comfortably accommodate the table and chairs even when they are pulled back. And that's it for everything you need to know about dining room rug ideas and styling tips. In short, the most timeless rug styles are:
- Neutral and natural-coloured rugs

- Bright-coloured dining room rugs
- Contrasting dining room rugs
