CARING FOR YOUR RUG

We source only the highest quality materials to ensure your rug stands up to modern family life. As with all types of flooring, our rugs require regular care to stay looking their best, so please take time to read the recommended care and cleaning procedures below.

REGULAR CLEANING

VACUUM REGULARLY

Vacuum your rug at least once a week. This will remove free soil particles and surface litter before it can build up and potentially damage the fibre and dull its appearance. Every two months, turn the rug over and vacuum the back of the rug. Every three months, we recommend you vacuum under infrequently moved furniture.

WHAT TYPE OF VACUUM CLEANER HEAD SHOULD I USE?

We recommend you use a plain suction head vacuum cleaner and occasionally use a turbo or revolving brush head vacuum. Over-use of a revolving brush may affect the tailored appearance of your rug.

PROFESSIONALLY CLEAN YOUR RUG AT LEAST EVERY TWO YEARS

Professional cleaning must be carried out when your rug looks dirty after vacuuming – or every two years at a minimum. You should consult a professional cleaner for the best method of cleaning. Do-it-yourself carpet shampoo machines are not recommended as some products can leave a sticky residue which attracts soil to the fibre.

CARING FOR YOUR RUG

ANTI-SLIP MAT

We deliver an anti-slip mat with all Bremworth rugs. For any hard floorings, we recommend you use this mat underneath your rug to prevent the jute backing from scratching the surface of your flooring. This mat will also help prevent the rug from moving on any flooring surface.

CURLED CORNERS, BUBBLING OR WRINKLING

Transportation can cause your rug’s edges or corners to curl or create a bubble to make the surface appear wrinkled. This is not a manufacturing fault and will rectify itself over time. Try rolling the rug the opposite way to which it came rolled up or place the rug on the reverse side down in the warm sunlight for 2-3 hours.

FADING

Like with all textiles your rug can change colour over time, particularly in areas consistently exposed to direct sunlight. Tip: we recommend UV protected glass and/or window furnishings. When positioning your rug, try to place it in an area away from direct sunlight and rotate the rug regularly.

PROTECT YOUR RUG FROM HEAVY FURNITURE

Place furniture cups under the legs of heavy furniture and regularly shift the furniture to give the pile fibre a chance to recover. To revive flattened wool pile, use a warm steam iron over a towel laid on top of your rug. Hold the steam iron gently over the towel and use the steam button to inject steam – do not press the iron down on the towel as this could leave gloss marks on the rug fibre underneath.

DEALING WITH SPILLS AND STAINS

CLEAN UP IMMEDIATELY

Remember, even though wool fibre naturally resists stains, carpets are likely to stain if spills are left untreated. Staining occurs from the chemical bonding of a pigment with the carpet fibre; once this bonding has taken place, separating the two is extremely difficult without causing damage to the carpet pile. That's why it's critical to sort out spills and stains as soon as they happen.

HOW TO REMOVE COMMON HOUSEHOLD STAINS

(See our full guide to Cleaning A Wool Rug for more details!)

Try to ‘contain the stain’ before using any recommended stain treatment or remedy. If the spill is of solid nature, carefully scoop up as much of it as you can. If the spill is a liquid, you can head straight into the next step.

Carefully tip a small amount of room temperature water on the spill and press on the spill using clean white paper towels. Be careful not to apply too much water or the spill could spread further. Discard and repeat with the paper towels until the spill disappears.

Soak up the excess water with more paper towels by applying more pressure – but never rub or scrub your rug as this can cause permanent damage to the pile. The rug should feel almost dry when you are finished.
